Patterdale Farm by Isabel Lau

Patterdale Farm
Isabel Lau
The artwork Patterdale Farm by John Glover is a historic Australian artwork and was painted in 1840. It is 76.7 x 115.2cm and the media is oil on canvas. John Glover was from Houghton England and moved to Australia in 1831 and is known as ‘the father of Australian landscape painting’.
The artwork Patterdale Farm is a painting and it is oil on canvas. The elements of the artwork is neutral colours and simple landscape images. The shapes are soft. It is not a crowded artwork, it has many repeated shapes and plain spaces. It has a horizontal axis. The lines in the artwork are soft but well defined. They are mainly curved. Lines are not used prominently in the artwork. It has a lot of depth but has little physical texture. It is quite symmetrical, it is well balanced and a lot of repetition is used. The colours used in the artwork are blue, many shades of green, white and brown. Blue is used for the sky, some mountains and the man’s coat. Green is used for the grass, leaves on the trees and some mountains. White is used for the cows, buildings and clouds. Brown is used for the cows, tree trunks, a tree branch and the dog. There are two main trees and multiple others. There are many cows, mountains, heels, buildings and also a man leaning against a tree with his dog.
The distinctive features in the artwork Patterdale Farm are the mountains in the background and the two trees that frame the artwork. This landscape is unique and different because it is set in outback Australia in the 1800’s. It is a relatively old landscape painting and has surprising detail in each element.
The main idea of the artwork Patterdale Farm is nature and is represented through the materials of simple oil on canvas meaning peace. The theme of the artwork is farming, nature and peace. The work is about the peace and quiet of Patterdale farm, Victoria. I think this means that John Glover found outback Australia very peaceful and calm compared to what he was used to in England. I think John Glover created this artwork to show people outside of Australia what Australia’s outback looked like. I think the two trees framing the artwork are meant to show the strength of nature. I think that the singe man in the artwork shows Australia’s small population.
I like this artwork because it portrays my love of nature and farming. I think this is a good artwork because it has attention to detail and good choices of shapes, colours and positioning. I think this artwork is good enough for a museum. I feel this way because it represents me and my childhood. It is very old and is still in good condition. It is large but every aspect and part have been given careful consideration before it was painted in.

The artwork Patterdale Farm by John Glover is an iconic Australian Artwork that was painted in 1840. It is a historic painting that is good enough for a museum.
